Book: Paper Towns by John Green [Quick Thoughts]

I had picked up Paper Towns by John Green a few years ago and started to read it, but it couldn't hold my attention long enough -- so life got in the way and it went on the shelf before I read the second chapter. After readying The Fault in Our Stars I picked it up and powered through the first few chapters. Part One of this book is exciting and thrilling to read -- you just don't know where the story is going next and you won't want to put it down. Part Two slows down and becomes a bit boring, but necessary. Part Three picks up again with a road trip these friends will never forget.

I really enjoyed the way John Green decided to format Part Three not in chapters but in hours driven. Also, I was surprised by the direction this story took -- it was not the most obvious route. I was provoked to think and reflect, which made the read more rewarding. This story is much more then a story about a boy who likes the girl next door.

Music Monday - September 2014 - #2 - Test of Time

This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "Test of Time" by Temples. I heard this song at the beginning of the summer on The Sounds in my Head. I had kind of forgotten about it until it hits the random shuffle of my playlist -- it's one of those good songs that you just know is special. I look forward to exploring more sounds from the Temples on their latest album Sun Structures. Take a listen and let me know what you think in the comment section down below!

Into the night, we are high; never mind,
And through the clouds, we arrive, like the skies in strike,
And as we dance on the stones, glass beneath our feet,
And from the clouds, be alive, nature speak.

Standing the test of time, wondering what
Sanding the test of time, gathering what

Music Monday - September 2014 - #1 - Jealous

After some time off from blogging I would like to jump back into this #MusicMonday with a song that I can't get out of my head. This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "Jealous (I ain't with it)" by Chromeo.

I get jealous, but I'm too cool to admit it
When the fellas, talk to my girl I ain't with it
I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it
I ain't with it, I ain't with it, I ain't with it

Music Monday - July 2014 - #3 - Gold

This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "Gold" by Sir Sly. I have heard this song being played in a few different places, so I thought I would share it. I really like the feel of this song and while the lyrics are somewhat repetitive (not in a bad way) they have a haunting quality with the message of following your dreams. The music video is also interesting to watch. I did not feel the video took anything away from my initial impression of the song. Take a listen and let me know what you think in the comment section down below!

Mouth is made of metal, metal, metal
Pocket full of yellow, yellow
Pocket full of gold
And I hope you find
I hope you find your dream
And darling never settle, settle, settle
Chasing down the devil, devil
Chasing down the gods
And I hope you find
I hope you find your dream

Music Monday - July 2014 - #2 - Riptide

This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "Ripetide" by Vance Joy. I have liked this song for a little while but had never watched the music video. Honestly, I don't watch many music videos but this one seems particular strange. Regardless, this is still a really great song! What do these lyrics mean to you?  Take a listen and let me know what you think in the comment section down below!

Lady, running down to the riptide
Taken away to the dark side
I wanna be your left hand man
I love you when you're singing that song
And I got a lump in my throat
'Cause you're gonna sing the word wrong

  1. Blog - I recently found this blog, GabiFresh, and I think it's fantastic! Gabi is a plus size fashionista who is breaking all the rules! I consider myself a curvy girl and it's refreshing to find someone who owns their body and celebrates that -- instead of trying to hide and conform to the "norm". Check it out for yourself!
  2. Food - I'm always looking for new and easy ideas for a fast healthy breakfast. These overnight oats are a great summer option. Eat warm or cold with you favorite toppings!
  3. Hair - This take on the braid is simple, clean and something I think anyone could accomplish!
  4. DIY - This simple switch can really brighten up a room! Display your artwork like a pro with bright and colorful matboard.
  5. Art - Have you ever seen anything like this before? I know I haven't! These amazing Splash Sculptures were created by Cassandra Warner and Jeremy Floto of Floto+Warner studio.

Music Monday - July 2014 - #1 - After the Disco

This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "After the Disco" by Broken Bells. Naturally Monday's are one of the most dreaded days of the week... the weekend is over and it is time to get back to work. Before I jump into my workday music sometimes I like to start off the morning with a little mood music. I'm still not fully wake, my coffee hasn't kicked in and I'm reflecting on the weekend. This song is great in many ways, but today I'm mourning the long weekend -- "after the disco". Take a listen and let me know what you think in the comment section down below!

But after the disco
All of the shine just faded away
Oh oh oh oh
Do what you want
Do what you will
But you can't hide
Oh oh oh oh
Do what you want
Do what you will
Don't tell me it's not our time

Music Monday - June 2014 - #5 - Something Good Can Work

This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "Something Good Can Work" by Two Door Cinema Club. After a relaxing vacation I had to jump back into working this Monday. As you might know, getting back in the mindset is not always the easiest thing to do after time off. This song definitely gets me in the mood to focus and make things happen! Take a listen and let me know in the comment section down below what your favorite workday motivation song is?!

Let's make this happen, girl
You gotta show the world that something good can work
And it can work for you
And you know that it will

My Top 6 Go To Girly Movies

It's Saturday! For me that means the husband is out of the house and it's time to get some house work done and relax from a busy work week. One of my favorite things to do it watch a girly movie. While my husband doesn't usually mind if I want to watch a certain movie. He sometimes has to be in the right mood to watch a girly movie with me. If we do, I better be ready for the smart *** remarks and him making fun of the goofy grin I get on my face during certain moments (I'll admit it!).  ANYWAY -- So I prefer to watch them when I have alone time. Plus, we have shows and things we want to watch together anyway.

I have compiled a list of my top 5 top 6 girly movies. To make this list I need to have watched the movie a whole lot! Too many times to count! If you haven't seen any of these I suggest you watch them at least once.

1) Ever After
As a little girl Cinderella was my FAVORITE Disney movie. My mom would tell me stories about how I had to watch it every morning over and over again. Well... Cinderella is still my favorite Disney movie, but I don't watch the animated version anymore (the VHS is probably in my parents basement somewhere). The movie Ever After is the closest thing to a Cinderella story if she was a real person -- without getting into the musical version. I love this movie and I have seen it way to many times to count or admit!

When I was younger my mom was the first person to introduce me to Jane Austen and the many BBC version of her work. Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in the BBC mini-series is one of my all time favorites, but who has time to watch a 3 hour movie frequently?! This 2005 Hollywood adaptation is great in its own right. How did they make Matthew Macfadyn so dreamy? I don't really find him attractive outside this movie. Keira Knightly does a great job fulfilling the audiences expectations of Elisabeth Bennet and the whole family is exactly what I had pictured when reading the book.

I first saw this movie on a date night with my husband -- back before he was my husband. I have always like Rachel McAdams and apparently my husband has too! lol If I remember correctly the skirt scene in the trailer is what got him to agree to see this movie in the theater in the first place. Oh AND... Jeff Goldberg and an appearance from Ty Burrell (aka Phil Dumphy). Aside from that -- the whole cast of this movie is spot on! My love for Diana Keaton and the contrast of Harrison Ford as a grumpy co-host is extremely entertaining in this "girl power" movie. This movie is a Sunday brunch staple!

In high school I was part of choir all four years. I have always wanted to be a great singer but I guess my "Pitch wasn't Perfect" (Sorry! Bad Joke). ANYWAY, if you have not been living under a rock you have seen this movie and know how AMAZING and funny it is. My husband was "Pitch Perfect" in high school (Sorry Again!) and he appreciated this movie as well. I think we played it every night before bed for a few months (We fall asleep to the TV most nights). After so many viewings it's still one of my go to movies. I can't wait to see if Pitch Perfect 2 lives up to the first one!

Every little girl wants to be a princess -- I know I do did! Much like the rags to riches story, Mia is an awkward normal teenager who finds out she's royal. Who doesn't love a good makeover/transformation movie! I don't care if I'm technically to old to still like this movie -- I'm still going to watch it over and over again!

This movie is just one of a kind! Basically, Penelope (Christina Ricci) has to find someone to loves her for who she really is when she comes across Johnny (James McAvoy). This movie has a great message with an air of fairy tale and fantasy for the modern girl.

I hope you enjoyed my girly movie list! In the comment section down below tell me what your go to girly movies are or if you have seen any of the ones listed here!

Walgreens End of May Haul

On a recent trip to Walgreens I picked up a few items for myself and my husband -- mostly for myself :D I have been wanting to find natural products I can purchase in my neighborhood. The best part of the trip was that most items were on sale or on clearance! I love that bar at the bottom of the receipt that tell you how much you saved. I have used most of these products and my favorites so far are the SheaMoisture items. I hope to do some reviews in the future. Tell me if you have tried any of these products in the comment section down below!

*NEW* are products I have not tried before.

Music Monday - June - #1 - Thunder Clatter

This #MusicMonday I'm featuring the song "Thunder Clatter" by Wild Cub. This is one of the best songs on their album Youth. While I really love this song, the music video is a little depressing. This song has a great beat and guitar loop. The lyrics are haunting yet hopeful and uplifting. Take a listen and let me know what you think in the comment section down below!

Music Monday - May - #2 - HAIM

This weeks #MusicMonday pick is the album Days Are Gone by Haim. This album has been out since August 2013, but I think it is perfect for summer! This album is something fresh but familiar. It reminds me of a late 80's girl pop band without the harsh techno beats or hairband electric guitar sound.

Haim has also been compared to Fleetwood Mac, which reminded me of my childhood summers traveling with family. I feel like the best Fleetwood Mac comparison would be any songs which Christine McVie is lead vocalist. Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, Haim actually did a cover of Hold Me.

Despite any comparisons, I feel Haim has a refreshing sound in today music world. Some notable tracks from this album are:

In The News: Is Your Face Wash Harming The Environment?

As of late environmentalist are up in arms about the use of microbeads in popular personal care products (facial cleansers, facial scrubs and even toothpaste). These microbeads are essentially tiny bits of plastic that are being washed down our sinks and into our lakes and oceans. These manufactured bits of plastic are too small for water treatment plants to filter them out. Some scientists are saying more research needs to be done on the effects of microbeads on the ecosystem. However, others are citing previous studies on the effects of plastic materials on the environment.

Plastics are known to absorb toxins in the environment -- including pesticides. These plastic materials can be ingested by animals and as a result toxins can make there way into the food chain. To date five states are considering banning the sale of any product with microbeads. These states include -- New York, Illinois, Ohio, California and Minnesota.

Johnson & Johnson, the company behind Clean & Clear and Neutragina products, have announced they are no longer using microbeads in there products. There efforts to reformulate current products will not take full effect until 2017. Proctor & Gamble has made a similar promise.

To get onboard with this cause supporting the 5 Cyres group. Also, avoid using and purchasing products with microbeads by downloading the Beat the Microbead app for iPhone, Android and Windows.

This product also complies with Leaping Bunny standards for cruelty free products.

Price & Quantity

1oz - $13.99
For the amount you get you might be apprehensive to spend the money, but let me assure you that a little goes a long way! You could used this balm twice a day and still have the jar for months to come.

How to Use

Gently dab a little under eyes, on face, or anywhere on the body to keep your skin nourished and healthy. Ideal for dry and delicate skin, as well as stretch mark prevention.

The Verdict

I'm hard pressed to find anything Badger that I don't like! The Beauty Balm is my first experience with their Damascus Rose beauty line. I selected this product because after deciding to give up oil cleansing with Grapeseed Oil I needed some extra moisture in my skincare routine. Also, before I picked up the Beauty Balm I was desperate enough to use the Sleep Balm to smooth out my dry skin at night. While the Sleep Balm is not intended as a beauty product, it was safe to use on the face sooo... that's what I did. The Beauty Balm was a natural progression from there.

I have used the Beauty Balm for about three weeks now and I can say that I have been very impressed since day one. The scent is very nice if you like lavender, rose and chamomile. I'm not sure how much it smells like rose, but I still like the smell regardless. The texture of the Beauty Balm is more "creamy" than their other balms they have. However, it is not a cream. When warmed between the fingers it is easily smoothed across the skin. It usually requires a few applications to cover your whole face. TIP: I did discover that if you need a light layer before putting on makeup you can apply the with a clean damp sponge.

I like this product, but I will probably use it along side one of their face oils in the future. The Beauty Balm is ideal as a night cream, under eye cream, and for applying longer lasting moisture to any rough patches of skin. I like using the Beauty Balm mainly for my acne patches that are still healing. It gave much needed moisture to area that are dry and flaky on my face without feeling heavy or caked on. The great thing about Badger is that this product is not only safe to use on your face, but other parts of your body (neck, hands, elbows, knees, stretch marks etc). This is really one of those "all-in-one" products.

I would recommend this product to all skin types, especially those with mature skin and dry skin.

Cleansing with Oil

image via recipe-finder.com
Natural Beauty has been a big topic of research and consideration in the back of my mind over the last few month. For me a big factor in my hesitation to making the switch had everything to do with money. I found myself searching “natural beauty on a budget” on Google and coming up with products priced all over the board. In reality, the natural beauty market has products for everyone and every budget. The difficulty in making the transition is that natural beauty information and products are less mainstream and, therefor, require research and testing to find what works for you.

Like me you may be thinking, “but, I don’t want to waste my money on something that doesn't work”. So after a lot of consideration I have been slowly building a list of items I can use to replace my toxic products. (Stay tuned for a full list coming in the future.) That said, i still want to continue to provide natural beauty information along the way so you can make the change with me.

Since we moved to North Carolina I have noticed my face breaking out a lot more, probably due to hormones and stress. Since I was a teenager I have received compliments about my skin, so I take my skin care seriously. However, I have never experienced acne like I have in the last 10 month. As a result, my first natural beauty priority was to find something that could combat this new development. The first product I choose to replace was my toxic and drying facial cleansers.

MY SKIN: I have combination skin with an oily t-zone and a dry chin. My acne is not normally the big and severe kind of pimples, even though i get those once in a while. My acne tends to be a mix of small red bumps, blackhead and the occasional whiteheads.

Acne Illustration Chart

One of the methods of cleansing I have discovered that is budget friendly is cleaning with oil.

You might be thinking, "What!? Using oil to clean? That's what I'm trying to avoid." While that is a totally natural response, you might feel differently after further explanation.

“One of the most basic principles of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruits that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the [Oil Cleansing Method] can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.”
- Acne.com

I could not have said it any better myself! Now that you know that oil can remove impurities from the skin. Your next question might be, “What oil should I use on my face?” The answer can be simple or as complex as you like. It seems that everyone has there own recipe for oil cleansing. Personally my goal was to find something inexpensive so I selected grapeseed oil to start with.

Update: Unfortunately, after trying the gapeseed oil for 3 months I have decided to move on to something new. This oil didn't seem to give me the results everyone was raving about. That doesn't mean grapeseed oil won't work for you! My next purchase will be Jojoba or Argan oil for use as a moisturizer.

The Oils
  • Grapeseed  - can actually help regulate your natural oil production, it's packed with antioxidants, including skin-brightening vitamin C
  • Jojoba - this heavy-duty oil can be used year-round to prevent moisture loss and soothe red, irritated skin. It’s especially great for dry and mature complexions, since these two skin types tend to have underactive sebum glands
  • Argan - it’s a lightweight hydrator that softens face, body, and even hair. Rich in natural vitamin E, argan also works to lighten acne scars and other forms of discoloration.
  • Safflower - contains some heavy-duty nutrients like vitamin E and essential fatty acids that can do right by your skin
  • Sunflower - balanced and rich nutrient composition with a large amount of vitamin E and fatty acids.

image via beautyeditor.ca

You can find some of these items in the cooking oil aisle at your local grocery store or in the beauty aisle of your local health/organic food store. You might have noticed I left two popular oils off this list...I purposely did not list Olive Oil and Coconut Oil because I have seen mixed review using these oils for cleansing. They tend to be more rich in texture and some found that they clogged the pores. I recommend you try one of the lighter oils listed above for the cleansing method. The closer the oil is the skins natural oil consistency more effective it will be.

Something else to consider -- Caster Oil is often used in the oil cleansing method because of its astringent properties. It is never used alone directly on the skin, but instead mixed with “base” oils to boost cleaning. There are many other natural oils you can add to this method to formulate your perfect recipe. Do your research on what will be best for your skin and budget.

Always make sure your are putting the best on your skin, whenever possible purchase 100% organic cold-pressed oils.

Once you select your oils try using it as a moisturizer for you skin first. Apply after your normal cleansing routine to see how your skin reacts to the oil. Take note of absorption and which areas become shiny later on into the day. Until your skin begins to regulate oil production carry a powder compact with you and/or blotting sheets to absorb any excess oil throughout the day. You will begin to see the moisturizing benefits of oil pretty quickly. When you're ready, progress to cleaning with the oil.

The Oil Cleansing Method
  1. image via beautyeditor.ca
Wet your face with a splash of warm water (even if you are wearing make up)
  2. Take a small amount of your oil and warm between your hands. ( I suggest you keep the oil as close to your finger fits as possible)
  3. After a few seconds of warming, rub the oil on to your face in general circles. If you are wearing makeup make sure you can see the makeup lifting from the surface of your skin before you proceed.
  4. Warm a clean washcloth in hot water. Place cloth over your face and let sit for a few moments pressing it gently against the surface of your skin until the cloth begins to cool.
  5. Gently wipe off the layer of oil from the skin in general circular motions with the washcloth. If you are wearing makeup, do not proceed until you are satisfied with the removal of any mascara, foundation, etc.
  6. Repeat the process once or twice more until your skin looks clean and feels fresh again.
  7. Take care of any "picking" (plucking eyebrows, pimple maintenance, etc.)
  8. Apply a natural toner. Let dry.
  9. If your skin feels tight, apply a light layer of oil for a moisturizer. If you are going to apply makeup, let your skin drink in the oil the lightly blot any shiny areas. If this is in the evening, I like to apply a thicker layer of oil under my eyes to help with puffiness, dark circles, and light wrinkling.

Things to consider:
  • Your skin will go through an adjustment period, some call this the detox stage. People have reported their skin getting “worse” before it gets better. Refrain from jumping back to your old cleanser till you have given the oil cleansing method a solid try (about a month or more). If you don’t see any change. Try experimenting with a different oil or a new combination of oils until you find the perfect blend for your skin.
  • WARNING: if you use oil in the shower, make sure to clean the floor of the shower. Oil buildup will create a slick surface. DON’T FALL!
  • Keep a fresh pillowcase on your pillow. While sleeping access oil may be transferred to your pillowcase. Make sure you clean your pillowcase regularly to avoid bacteria and impurities that may have built up overtime.
  • Research, Research, Research! I know I say it frequently, but it’s very important especially when using new ingredients. Natural ingredients can also do harm when not used correctly. There are many different oil cleansing recipes out there, so never put anything in or on your body that you are not well informed about.

Now that you know about the Oil Cleansing Method try it and feel free to share your results in the comment section down below!

UPDATE COMING SOON!
I have some things I want to say about my trials with the use of natural oils on my skin. Look for that post in the future. Just know that this method is not for everyone.

These products are not hard to find. They are available at a number of national stores and online.

How to Use

Sweep mascara brush from lash base to tips. Apply multiple coats for added volume.

Comparison

The biggest difference between these two products is the packaging and the applicator brush.

Fakeout: I am a fan of this packaging because it does not look like an eco or green product. The shape of the applicator handle is very unique without feeling strange in your hand. This product has a fatter rubber applicator of the two and is slightly shorter with finer rubber bristles. The size did not take long to adjust to and seems comparable to other applicators on the market. With that in mind, this mascara separates the lashes well without clumping while it lengthened and added volume. I would attribute the volume I experienced to the applicator.

Origin: This packaging is more eco and green inspired. This product has a slimmer rubber applicator of the two and is slightly longer with thicker  rubber bristles. The size was comfortable and seems similar to other applicators on the market, however the thicker rubber bristles act to separate better then the Fakeout mascara. With that in mind, this mascara separates the lashes very well without clumping while adding length. I would say of the two this did not add as much volume. I would attribute the results I experienced to the applicator.

The Good and the Bad

Here are the pros:

  • Lengthens
  • Separates
  • Less Clumping
  • Covers from base to tip
  • Easily washed away

Why I liked them:

I have long eyelashes that stick straight forward (they don’t have much natural upward curl) and being a blonde, my eyelashes are also not very dark. I’m happy to report that these mascaras cover from base to tip very nicely and highlight the length of lashes. Both applicators do separate lashes and do not encourage clumping (however, this does not always apply to additional layers of mascara or reapplication). I love how it has made my naked eyelashes feel! They feel moisturized and soft, not dry or brittle. These mascaras are also easily washed away with gentle soap or oil. I like that I can easily correct any mascara applying accidents.

Here are the con’s:
  • Flakes
  • Smudges
  • Does not hold curl
  • Minimal volume

Why they fell short for me:

Knowing that I have long eyelashes that stick straight forward (that don’t have much natural upward curl) finding a mascara to hold curl is always something I look for. Unfortunately (I’m not surprise), I did not find that with these mascaras. This is something I have learned to live with and is only a minor issue for me. Also, these mascaras don’t provide a great amount of volume. I might have long lashes but I am always looking for added fullness. These don’t quite hit the mark, but do provided a natural look for everyday.

The biggest issues I noticed was the smudging and flaking. I have noticed that with my oily skin smudging does occur unintentionally. I try my best to avoid touching my eye area. Additionally, flaking is something that I did noticed. This usually happens if I itched my eyes. Also, I have noticed flaking at the end of the night or when I have had the mascara for a while. I would suggest replacing your mascara if you are experiencing frequent flaking.

The Verdict

Overall, I have to say this is a decent natural mascara for the price and availability. The ingredient lists look very similar to me (I'm no chemist by any means), which only gives me further validation of my feeling that these two products are similar in many ways. However, my favorite of the two products would be the Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara. Why? Because while Fakeout has some added volume. Origin is better suited to lengthen and separate my long lashes. It really comes down to preference of applicator for me. I would buy these products again, but I am still on the hunt for the holy grail of natural mascaras.
